Artisan profile
Allpa has over 80 small to medium-sized workshops spread across Peru. Through their textile production, they aim to raise awareness of Peruvian culture and help preserve it. Allpa develops annual collections in line with market trends and supports the growth of craftspeople through technical assistance, training and loans. This transforms the weavers into entrepreneurs and gives them access to the global market.
Examples of the Incas’ connection to the alpaca can be found even in the earliest periods of Peruvian history. During the Inca Empire, alpaca was used exclusively by the royal family, as it was considered the finest material. Alpaca is supple and feels smooth to the touch. It is softer than cashmere and warmer and more durable than lambswool. It contains microscopic air pockets, which ensure lightweight garments with excellent insulating properties. It is a completely natural fibre, produced without the use of harsh chemicals.
Most alpacas live freely in the highlands of the Peruvian Andes and are not harmed during shearing. Their soft, padded feet protect the grassy ground, and they graze without damaging the root systems of the vegetation. The alpaca is the only animal that produces up to 28 natural colours, which can be blended to create an infinite variety of natural shades – from deep black through warm chestnut tones to snow white. It can be easily dyed any colour whilst always retaining its natural lustre.
