Artisan’s profile
Examples of the close connection between the Incas and the alpaca can be found even in the earliest chapters of Peruvian history. The Incas valued alpaca wool more highly than gold or silver. The knowledge and craftsmanship of spinning and knitting have been passed down from generation to generation, resulting in Peru’s rich and diverse textile heritage. New patterns are combined with traditional methods, lending the products an innovative touch whilst remaining true to their ethical heritage.
The alpacas live largely free and unrestricted in the highlands of the Peruvian Andes and are not harmed during shearing. Their soft, padded feet protect the grassy ground, and they graze without damaging the vegetation’s root system. The alpaca is the only animal that produces up to 28 natural colours, which can be blended to create an infinite variety of natural shades – from deep black through warm chestnut tones to snow-white. It can be easily dyed any colour whilst always retaining its natural lustre.
Alpaca is supple and feels smooth; thanks to its feather-light weight, it is also ultra-light. Alpaca is softer than cashmere and warmer and more durable than lambswool. It contains microscopic air pockets, which make for lightweight garments with excellent insulating properties. It is a completely natural fibre, produced without the use of harsh chemicals.
